The Nurse Practitioner (NP) at CHEO is a nurse in an advanced nursing practice position with additional educational preparation from an accredited NP program and who has clinical expertise in a pediatric nursing subspecialty. The NP integrates the skills and knowledge from nursing and medicine within a broad framework of advanced nursing practice. The NP functions both autonomously and in collaboration with physicians and other health care providers to manage, in a comprehensive manner the health needs of a defined population of patients/ case load with cancer. The NP will also be involved in cancer survivorship follow up care.

Job responsibilities include the following areas: Direct Clinical practice and Consultation (60-80%), Education (5-10%), Leadership/ Change Agent (5-10%), Research (5-10%) and ongoing Professional Development.

Working closely with the Hematology & Oncology Interdisciplinary Team, the nurse practitioner will participate in the management of patients presenting to the Hematology & Oncology Clinic with different types of cancers, will be involved in teaching and medication management.

Position Summary:  Reporting to the Manager, the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a Registered Nurse who promotes excellent care and advances nursing practice. The CNS acts as a resource, consultant and advocate for pediatric patients/families with cancer, kidney disease and hematological disorders within the Health Centre.  The CNS advances the care for children and families by collaboratively developing and incorporating standards of care and integrating evidence into practice, education and research. As an expert clinician with advanced theoretical knowledge, the CNS works in collaboration with the interprofessional team to deliver and coordinate the care for children/families with complex health conditions and improve the outcomes of care for children, youth, and families throughout the continuum of care. The CNS works in collaboration with children, youth, families, interprofessional teams, and community partners. The CNS contributes to the advancement of nursing practice through his/her interactions with staff (i.e. role-modeling, consultation and mentoring) and leading or participating in team initiatives/research that addresses nursing practice issues.  The CNS provides nursing leadership within the services of Hematology/Oncology and Nephrology.  The CNS liaises with other clinical areas in the Health Centre to provide care and leadership for patients requiring Hematology/Oncology/Nephrology services.
